WHWNH is one of several recent works I have made in which text appears through some kind of vegetation. Here the words came from an essay I had been writing about trying to draw a non-descript patch of ground - a small area of grass threaded with weeds.
What happens when nothing happens? As Georges Perec asked, How do we occupy such places, when nothing in particular is going on? Can describing what surrounds us, in the careful, exhaustive detail of its mundanity, form a sense of being there – or does our use of language always take us somewhere else?
WHWNH seemed to me a kind of ultimate open question; a question about freedom.
